CHAPTER 25

“YOU CAN’T DO THAT!” I yelled, struggling to free myself from the soldiers’ strong grips.

“Watch us,” one of the soldiers said. They began to drag my thrashing body out of the room.

“Sir, may I speak?” said Asta, not looking at me.

The general nodded at her.

“There are children and juveniles outside, and her gown shows more than what’s acceptable.”

He froze in his steps and signaled to Asta. “Take care of it.”

The general strode out with the other soldiers. Asta spoke to a nurse, who fetched some folded scrubs and closed the room’s door as she left. I looked at Asta, waiting for her next step. She stood with her back resting against the door, facing me.

“Change your clothes while I’m talking. Under no circumstances will you look at me. They are watching. Your family is safe. The general needs you alive. After you finish dressing, I will walk you to the door. My gun is loaded and safety’s off. Take it out and use me as a shield to avoid the rubber bullets. There is an ambulance waiting for you downstairs. Make no mistakes, or you will be arrested.”

I understood her plan. But I didn’t know if she was helping or playing me to get me in more trouble. I spoke when my head was inside the scrubs’ top. “How do I know you aren’t lying?” I hissed from inside, and slid it down over my torso.

“You don’t.” She walked behind me and yelled, “Move, inmate!”

A nurse opened the door, and two soldiers entered the room to grab me. I knew I had to act fast. Adrenaline rushed into my veins. I turned to Asta, pulled her gun from her holster, and pointed it at her temple. “Don’t move. Raise your hands.”

Asta lifted her hands, and all the soldiers rushed toward us, their guns aimed at me. The sound of their hammers pulling back filled me with fear.

“I swear I’ll kill her,” I screamed. “I’ll shoot her right in the head if anyone gets in my way.”

Nurses outside screamed in panic and ran helter-skelter. For a moment, I wanted to do the same. I stepped closer to Asta, one hand pointing the gun at her and the other encircling her neck.

She was my human shield.

“All of you, out! Now!”

The general appeared in the open doorway, his eyes on fire. “Miss Evgenís, let’s talk.”

“I’m done talking. The first bullet will be in your head if they don’t move.”

We gazed at each other. I refused to blink or show any kind of expression. He was a cunning man and would take advantage of me if I showed the slightest hesitation. He nodded to his soldiers, and they moved aside and allowed us to pass.

“Move!” I yelled again, pushing Asta to send an obvious message. We walked out of the room, and once I was past the blockade of soldiers, I swiveled around to walk backward with her held in front of me. Nobody spoke a word; they needed me alive.

The soldiers tried to get closer, but the general cleared his throat and shook his head.
